Audiovisual Aesthetics and Language

  This curricular unit introduces students to the principles of audiovisual aesthetics and language, exploring how image, sound, composition, lighting, colour, movement and editing contribute to meaning-making in audiovisual productions. Through the critical analysis of audiovisual works and practical experimentation, students develop visual literacy, aesthetic awareness and the ability to critically interpret audiovisual language while applying its principles to the creation of audiovisual productions. The course encourages students to justify their creative decisions and prepares them to design visually coherent productions suited to a variety of contemporary communication contexts.

  Introduction to audiovisual aesthetics and language. Principles of audiovisual storytelling and the grammar of audiovisual language. Visual composition, framing, perspective and camera movement. Lighting, colour and art direction as expressive elements. Mise-en-scène and visual narrative construction. Editing, rhythm, continuity and discontinuity. Sound, music and silence as expressive resources. Styles, genres and aesthetic movements in audiovisual production. Critical analysis of audiovisual works and the application of aesthetic and narrative principles through practical exercises.
• ObjectivosObjectives

  By the end of this curricular unit, students will be able to: - Understand the fundamental principles of audiovisual aesthetics and language. - Identify, analyse and critically interpret the visual and auditory elements that shape audiovisual narratives. - Recognise different audiovisual styles, genres and aesthetic approaches. - Apply principles of composition, framing, lighting, colour, movement and rhythm according to narrative and communicative intentions. - Understand the contribution of editing, sound and mise-en-scène to audiovisual meaning. - Develop visual literacy, aesthetic awareness and critical thinking. - Justify creative and aesthetic decisions in the analysis of audiovisual works and practical projects.

• MetodologiaMethodology

  The curricular unit adopts active learning methodologies, combining lectures with the critical analysis of audiovisual works, case studies, guided discussions and practical experimentation. Students complete individual and collaborative exercises, applying the principles of audiovisual language and aesthetics to creative problem-solving. Whenever appropriate, audiovisual editing and post-production software is used to explore concepts such as rhythm, editing, colour and visual storytelling. Learning is further supported through critical reflection, continuous feedback and project presentations, fostering autonomy, creativity and the ability to justify aesthetic decisions.
