Cloud Computing

Computer Networks and Systems
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The course unit Cloud Computing is part of the technical training of the CTeSP in Networks and Computer Systems and provides students with the foundations of cloud computing and its service and deployment models. Its main scope includes the creation and management of cloud infrastructures, including virtual machines, virtual networks, storage, containers and the secure exposure of services, with a strong practical component. The course unit also covers security in cloud environments, including the shared responsibility model, access control, monitoring, hardening and cost control. Due to its applied nature, this course unit extends systems and network administration to cloud environments, preparing students for on-the-job training.
  • ProgramaProgramme
Description of contents Cloud Computing Fundamentals Concept, evolution and comparison with traditional computing. Service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) and deployment models. Cloud Infrastructure Regions, resources, virtual machines and storage. Cost management, budgets and alerts. Networking and Remote Access SSH, virtual networks, ports, security groups and UFW. Domains, DNS and service exposure. Containers and Service Publishing Docker and Docker Compose. Nginx as a reverse proxy and HTTPS with Let's Encrypt. Automation and Operations Automation and infrastructure as code. Monitoring, metrics and event logging. AI in infrastructure operations: capabilities and risks. Cloud Security Shared responsibility, identities and least privilege. Defence in depth and hardening.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
The course unit aims to provide students with essential knowledge in cloud computing, preparing them to build, secure and maintain cloud infrastructures in production. Students are expected to be able to: Understand cloud computing concepts and the service and deployment models. Create and manage virtual machines, networks and storage while controlling costs. Configure virtual networks, access rules and the secure exposure of services. Containerise services and publish them with a custom domain and HTTPS. Automate infrastructure configuration and monitor its operation. Apply good cloud security practices, including identity management and hardening.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
The course unit integrates innovative methodologies based on hands-on work on a real public cloud platform, where each student creates and manages their own virtual machine with a custom domain, using free student programmes and with cost control from the first class. Classes combine theoretical exposition with progressive practical worksheets, using industry tools such as Docker, Nginx, Let's Encrypt, Portainer and automation scripts. The course also explores infrastructure operation assisted by AI agents, with a critical analysis of their capabilities, limits and risks. Project-based learning, culminating in a secure cloud infrastructure in production, fosters autonomy, problem-solving and work under near-real conditions.
