Computer Applications for Management

Business Management
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The Management IT Applications course develops skills in using spreadsheets and Power BI to organise, process, analyse and visualise data to support management and decision-making. It covers cell editing and formatting, operators, formulas, mathematical and logical functions, lookup and reference functions, and worksheet setup and printing. Advanced topics include pivot tables and charts, slicers, data grouping, timelines and dashboards. The Power BI component covers data import and transformation, data modelling, DAX, visualisation and the use of Power BI Service. These topics support the development of practical solutions for analysing and presenting management information.

  • ObjectivosObjectives
By the end of this module, students should have achieved the following learning outcomes: LO1.: To be proficient in the most commonly used statistical procedures, tables, techniques and machine learning systems, utilising not only the most basic functions but also the AI features available in Excel, as well as other AI systems external to the programme LO2.: Carry out data analysis, adding value to the information used in business decision-making. LO3.: Identify underlying patterns and extract useful information from the large volume of heterogeneous data found within organisations; LO4.: Extract relevant information and produce reports and dashboards to support informed decision-making, using pivot tables in Excel and Power BI.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
The group project follows a project-based learning approach: throughout the semester, students develop a data analysis project applied to human resources management, culminating in a final dashboard in Excel and Power BI. Classes use realistic and anonymised HR datasets (e.g. absenteeism, staff turnover, remuneration and training), helping students connect the tools with real-world professional challenges.   A flipped classroom approach is used selectively: introductory materials (videos and guides) are made available on Moodle before the class, while face-to-face sessions focus on practical exercises and problem-solving. Students explore the AI features integrated into Excel and Power BI critically, always verifying the results obtained. Continuous formative feedback is also provided on the exercises and on intermediate versions of the group project.

  • AvaliaçãoEvaluation

    Avaliação contínua:
    1. Trabalho individual / grupo (40%)
