Computer Systems Administration

Cybersecurity
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The curricular unit Information Systems Administration falls within the field of operating systems and IT infrastructure management, representing a key component in the technical training of students in the Cybersecurity programme. Its main focus is the configuration, management and maintenance of information systems in local and networked environments, with particular emphasis on Linux-based systems, addressing fundamental concepts and tools to ensure system availability, reliability and security. Within the study cycle, this curricular unit contributes to the development of essential competencies related to user, resource, process and service management, as well as virtualization and task automation, providing a solid foundation for more advanced curricular units in the field of cybersecurity.
  • ProgramaProgramme
Content description Introduction to information systems administration Fundamental concepts of operating systems Types of operating systems and application areas The role of system administration in the cybersecurity context Work environments and virtualization Hosted virtualization and basic concepts Creation and management of virtual machines Laboratory environments Linux systems and command line File system structure Essential commands for navigation and file management Permissions, ownership and access control User, process and service management User and group creation and management Processes, services and run levels Basic system monitoring Networks and essential services Basic networking concepts in Linux systems Configuration of essential services (DHCP, DNS, Web) Maintenance, automation and lightweight virtualization Backups, updates and log management Introduction to automation with Bash scripting Docker
  • ObjectivosObjectives
The main goal of this curricular unit is to provide students with technical and practical skills in information systems administration, enabling them to configure, manage and maintain operating systems and services in local and networked environments, with a focus on security and reliability. By the end of the unit, students should be able to: Understand the fundamental principles of operating systems and system administration. Install, configure and manage Linux systems in physical and virtualized environments. Use the command line to manage files, users, permissions, processes and services. Configure basic networks and services and perform maintenance and monitoring tasks. Apply good administration and security practices. Work autonomously and collaboratively to solve technical problems.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
The curricular unit adopts practice-oriented and problem-based learning methodologies focused on real-world system administration scenarios. Classes combine theoretical exposition with laboratory activities, fostering the progressive configuration of Linux systems, virtualized environments and network services. Innovative approaches include project-based and problem-based learning, the use of virtual environments to simulate real infrastructures and the application of administrative and collaborative tools. Students are encouraged to experiment, document and reflect on the adopted procedures, fostering autonomy, critical thinking and teamwork.
