Fundamentals of Safety and Hygiene at Work

  This Curricular Unit intends to provide students with an integrated and modern vision of the issue of Occupational Health and Safety in the national and international context, using a systematic approach to the main themes within this scientific area.
• ProgramaProgramme

  Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) The work and the prevention of occupational risks. The development of prevention and the role of International Institutions and of European Union. The new prevention approach - Directive 89/391/EEC. The dynamics of OSH in Portugal. Legal Framework for OSH in Portugal The legal framework of OSH. The system of compensation for occupational accidents and occupational diseases. Organization and Development of OSH Services  The legal framework of OSH Services.  Organisation and development of OSH Services.  The key activities undertaken by the OSH Services. Emerging OHS Risks Causal factors for emerging risks. Statistical indicators for emerging risks. Characterization of emerging risks (physical, biological, psychosocial and chemical). Preventive action of emerging risks (physical, biological, psychosocial and chemical).
• ObjectivosObjectives

  Know the historical, political and social work which has emerged within the area of Occupational Safety and Health; Identify the moments in the history of Occupational Safety and Health in the framework of the ILO, the European Union and in Portugal; Characterize the current legal system framework of Occupational Safety and Health and the organization of prevention and protection in organizations; Meet the new emerging risks; Characterize the main risk factors of new and emerging risks and the processes of preventive Understand and apply the rules relating to the organization of emergency in force.
