Occupational Safety Engineering students visit Porto Metro construction sites

Objetivos de Desenvoltimento Sustentável (ODS)
During this technical visit on 27 May, the classroom view of the students from the Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety Engineering and the Master's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management was different: from the works of the Ruby Line of Metro do Porto, on the riverbank, participants were able to look towards Gaia and see the ISLA Gaia building on the other side of the river.

The visit, organised by Professor Manuel Tender, involved undergraduate and master's students, as well as the wider ISLA community, providing direct contact with a large-scale and complex construction project. On site, students were able to observe first-hand the challenges associated with safety, work organisation and risk management in a real construction context.

Among the main added values of the initiative were contact with real safety practices on site, the connection between taught content and professional reality, and the students' exposure to technical contexts that may form part of their future professional careers. The initiative reinforces the importance of technical visits as a complement to academic training, promoting more applied learning aligned with labour-market demands.
