ApresentaçãoPresentationThis course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of tourism, covering the historical evolution of the sector, its institutional organisation, and the dynamics of demand and supply. Placed in the 1st semester of the 1st year of the Bachelor’s in Tourism Management, it provides the theoretical and conceptual basis for subsequent courses in the programme, enabling students to understand tourism as a system and as an economic, social, cultural, and territorial phenomenon. It also raises awareness of current sector challenges, with particular emphasis on sustainability, professional responsibility, and the role of tourism in destination development.

ObjectivosObjectivesBy the end of the course, students should be able to: Identify and explain the core concepts and definitions of tourism. Describe the historical evolution of tourism and relate it to societal change. Characterise tourism demand, identifying key determinants and main tourist typologies. Characterise tourism supply, distinguishing products, services, and private/institutional actors. Understand the structure and organisation of tourism in Portugal and recognise the role of key public and private entities. Interpret basic tourism statistics from official sources. Recognise the main economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts of tourism and discuss the role of sustainability in tourism development. Transferable skills: teamwork, academic oral and written communication, critical and reflective thinking, responsibility and autonomy.

MetodologiaMethodologyClasses combine theoretical exposition with discussion and practical application of concepts: interactive lectures; analysis of short cases and destination examples; exercises on interpreting statistical data; tutorial supervision of the group project. Active methodologies that promote student engagement and the development of transversal skills will be mobilized, namely: Collaborative learning: small-group tasks, debates, and oral presentations. Flipped classroom: pre-class readings/data consultation followed by guided discussion. Reflective teaching: short written reflections on overtourism, gentrification, impacts, and sustainability.
