Sound and Image Fundamentals

Sound and Image
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
This is an introductory course on sound and image designed to provide students with basic knowledge of the audiovisual expressive realm. Therefore, the course is primarily theoretical, fostering foundational skills for the technical creation and production of audiovisual works, in parallel with critical knowledge of the field. This course engages with sonic and visual elements, exploring everything from physics to language, and from grammar to semiotics.
  • ProgramaProgramme
Sound Fundamentals What is sound? Physical principles, topics in acoustics and psychoacoustics. Microphones: Typologies, technologies, and recording techniques: Stereo, Mono, and Multichannel. Sound Diffusion: Stereo, Mono, and Multichannel. Digital Audio: Digital Signal Processing: Sampling, Sample Rate (SR), Bit Depth (BD), Formats, codecs. Historical perspective of sound for cinema. Sound production processes for audiovisual content. Diegesis and classical techniques. Image Fundamentals Introduction and History: What is an image? Historical evolution. Physics of Perception: Physics of light and the human eye. Visual Language I (Space): Framing, perspective, and visual composition. Visual Language II (Scale): The shot and its meaning (Close-up, Long Shot, etc.). Audiovisual Semiotics. Colour Theory: Psychology of chromatic perception and aesthetics.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
Understand the affordances of sound as a medium, interface, and tool in multimedia and artistic design. Develop a critical and aesthetic sense regarding the use of sound in artistic and communication artefacts. Develop basic technical competencies for sound creation in audiovisual and computational media. Acquire basic technical and artistic vocabulary regarding sound design. Comprehend the nature of the image (still and moving) and its communicational and expressive properties. Develop a critical sense and the capacity for aesthetic analysis concerning visual composition, light, and colour in multimedia contexts. Apply the principles of visual grammar (framing, shots, continuity) in the deconstruction and creation of visual narratives. Master the fundamental technical vocabulary of cinematography and visual design to communicate creative intentions clearly.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
The classes are expository in nature, involving the transmission of a problematizing theoretical-practical analysis framework, grounded in the literature and articulated through theoretical-technical concepts and assumptions, as well as practical and demonstrative exercises. The connecting thread underlying the programme's design will be highlighted throughout the course, ensuring articulation between its different parts. Teaching is conducted in theoretical and laboratory practice sessions, guided by supervised tasks and laboratory sessions for individual and group work, in which students are monitored, observed, and questioned using research tools and in-class mini-presentations.
